HEBDEN Bridge will get into the Festive spirit this year with shops opening for late night Christmas shopping on Thursday, November 26, Thursday, December 3 and Thursday, December 10. In addition there will be free parking from 3pm on December 3 and December 10 including the newly opened Valley Road car park, giving Hebden Bridge an extra 38 parking spaces.
The first late night opening (November 26) co-incides with the grand switch-on of the Christmas lights in St George's Square and all the new lights around town that have been funded by the Business Association and Hebden Bridge Rotary Club.Mayor and Mayoress of Hebden Royd ,Coun John and Jo Beacroft Mitchell will switch on the lights around the Square's Christmas Tree at 6.15pm and will be joined by the local infant and junior schools and members of both Hebden Bridge bands to sing carols. Prior to the switch-on there will be lantern parade along Bridge Gate to the Square. Those people interested in making a lantern and joining in the parade are asked to ccome along to a free lantern workshop on Sunday November 22 , 2 pm to 4pm; Monday, and Tuesday (November 23/24) 3.45pm to 6pm at Hebden Bridge Methodist Church.
One session will allow a lantern to be completed although people are welcome to attend more workshops to create a larger piece. All ages and abilities are invited. Friends or family can work together with internationally renowned artists. All materials are supplied. Everyone is welcome and children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Kerith Ogden one of the artists who worked on The Handmade Parade explained: "We want everyone to get involved in the lantern workshops and parade; adults, children, families, groups of friends and individuals are welcome to attend. "Lots of people think the work we do is just for children, but it's actually organised for all ages and abilities to get involved." and Mr McKie warns residents shoppers to "look out for snow" during the switch-on.
